Ground faults may occur silently in DC battery systems and create risks such as equipment damage, fire hazards, or unexpected downtime. In many DC systems, a first fault may remain unnoticed, while subsequent faults can quickly escalate into critical failures.
Alpais Ground Fault Detection integrates ground fault relay and leakage current sensor information into the Alpais battery monitoring interface to support earlier alarm generation and faster operator response.
What this solution covers
- Ground fault monitoring for DC battery systems
- Leakage current sensor and ground fault relay integration
- Ground fault alarm display on the Alpais interface
- Email notification for registered users
- Application for battery packs and battery connection cables
Why Ground Fault Monitoring Is Essential
Ground faults can occur as a result of insulation problems, battery leakage causing chassis contact, or battery connection cables contacting the chassis. Early detection and alarm generation help operators identify these conditions before they compromise the system.
Ground fault monitoring supports operational continuity by helping maintenance teams detect abnormal grounding conditions and respond before the situation develops into a more serious fault.
The Alpais Ground Fault Detection Solution
Alpais integrates a ground fault relay and a leakage current sensor for each battery string. Whenever a ground fault occurs, the relay triggers the Alpais system and the software notifies users through the monitoring interface.
This approach provides timely alerts, supports preventive maintenance, and improves visibility for critical DC power applications without adding unnecessary complexity.
Alpais Ground Fault Detection Architecture
The ground fault detection application is designed to detect ground faults that may occur in the battery pack or battery connection cables.
System Design and Notifications
A leakage current sensor is placed on the connection cable between the UPS and the battery pack to measure leakage current that may occur in the system. The measured value is set to 30 mA on the relay.
The ground fault relay receives the measured value and activates when it reaches the specified set value. Variances of 1% in mA may occur.
After the contact information is processed in the control module, a “ground fault detected” notification is displayed on the Alpais interface. A “ground fault detected” email is also sent to registered users within the same period.
