Battery Monitoring System Architecture and Components

Modular Battery Monitoring System Architecture

The Alpais Battery Monitoring System uses a modular architecture consisting of three main hardware components: Battery Module, String Module and Control Module. This structure supports scalable cell-level and string-level monitoring for stationary battery systems.

The architecture can be adapted to different battery-bank sizes and project configurations, from small UPS battery installations to larger industrial, utility and critical-power applications.

The standard modular structure includes:

  • One Battery Module for each individual battery or cell
  • One String Module for each battery string
  • One Control Module for up to 4 String Modules
  • Each String Module can connect up to 120 Battery Modules
  • Each Control Module can monitor up to 480 batteries across multiple strings

For battery strings containing more than 120 batteries or cells, additional String Modules can be integrated within the same monitoring architecture. See the Industrial Battery Monitoring Solutions page for related large-scale and industrial applications.

Battery Module (BATMOD)

Alpais BATMOD Battery Module for individual battery monitoring

Battery Modules are designed for lead-acid and Ni-Cd battery systems. Available module versions support 6V, 12V and 1.2V/2V battery applications.

Each Battery Module measures individual battery voltage, internal resistance and battery temperature, providing detailed visibility into battery condition and long-term measurement trends.

The Battery Module includes a transparent cover and three status LEDs for quick on-site indication.

Automatic addressing simplifies installation and helps reduce commissioning time.

String Module (STRMOD)

Alpais STRMOD String Module for string-level battery monitoring

The String Module collects data from the connected Battery Modules and transfers it to the Control Module.

It supports string-level monitoring including string voltage, string current and charge and discharge behavior. Ambient temperature and humidity can also be monitored according to the configured project architecture and sensors.

One String Module supports communication with up to 120 Battery Modules.

Application-specific examples are available on the Battery Monitoring Applications page.

Control Module (CONMOD)

The Control Module is the central unit of the architecture and is responsible for collecting, processing and managing measurement data received from the String Modules.

It supports up to 4 String Module connections and enables communication with external monitoring platforms through protocols such as SNMP, Modbus RTU and Modbus TCP. This supports integration with SCADA, DCIM, facility-management and other supervisory systems according to the project requirements.

The system can store up to 10 years of historical data and provides Ethernet connectivity for local or remote access.

Alpais CONMOD Control Module with communication and embedded server options

Alpais provides Control Module configurations with and without an embedded server. In the embedded-server version, Alpais Software is installed directly on the Control Module, reducing the need for a separate external server or PC.

Measurement records and the monitoring interface can be managed locally on the embedded Control Module according to the selected system configuration.
